Plants vs. Zombies has a lot going against it. Here's a game that lacks any online play whatsoever, has been out for over a year on
other ubiquitous platforms such as the PC and iPhone, and is apart of the common tower-defense genre. With these large barriers, it's even more impressive that Plants vs. Zombies manages to be relevant and maintain the charm and personality that made it the poster child for casual gaming to begin with.
The gameplay should come as no surprise. You're tasked with defending your home against several waves of undead. The game gives you several plants to choose from that each have specific offensive and defensive uses. As you progress through the game, you will unlock dozens of plants and fight against many different zombies that require various tactics to combat against. It's standard tower-defense gameplay structure, but with cute plants and zombies.
So what makes the console version different from before? This iteration of Plants vs. Zombies includes a couple of local-multiplayer modes. There's a Versus mode in which one player takes the traditional role of the plants, and the other plays as the zombies. A co-op mode is also available were two players can take on zombies in various challenges and mini-games like “whack-the-zombie”. These modes aren't enough to justify buying the game again on their own, but do provide good-fun with another person whom isn't well versed in video games.
The most surprising thing is the fantastic transition from PC to Console. The cursor is easy to move around the screen and never feel cumbersome. It's easy to maneuver from one side of the screen to the other and collect all the solar energy.
This edition of Plants vs. Zombies is obviously the best looking one and the most content heavy, even though the new additions aren't worth the $15 on their own. If you have never played this game before, buy it. Plants vs. Zombies is one of the best pick up and play titles you can have in your library. With it's charming personality and colorful art-style, this game is a must buy for first-timers. Those who have been down this rode before on other platforms may be hard-pressed to justify the price tag considering the game is $10 on PC.
