I haven't played Fallout 3 since I beat it in... well, November 2008. So, almost 2 years since I've been to the Capital Wasteland. I've been buying up the add-ons, but it' wasn't until a few of my friends kept going on and on about this mission or that and re-playing this incredibly open game and I decided "Me too! I shall start up again!" So I did, and yea it was great. Even better with the DLC too!
I won't get too into the story, the voice acting (or how you can spot the same voice actor all over the wastes), the gameplay or the RPG elements. I will tell you why, and just why I'm knocking off one star from this review.
It's the audio and some of the visuals, but mainly audio.
This game, simply put is really, really boring to listen to. Yes, I do understand that there's been nuclear war and most music has been destroyed along with the radio stations that supplied them, but hearing the same 10 or so songs on GNR and the same dialogue over and over again from Three Dog will just make you want to end life.
To keep from getting too bored with the listening to the same things over and over again I had to play something in the background on my PC (which was usually some DVD I can easily tune out on). Now to be fair there's nothing wrong with the selection of songs in the game, but.. this is a LONG game with a lot to see and do, and listening to these handful of songs will just drive a person nuts! I know it did me at least.
So you can also tune into the President's radio station, but there's even less music on that and you here the same rhetoric over and over again.
This may just be, no.. no it is my personal taste at play, but honestly I got so tired of listening to the game it felt like a chore until I started popping DVD's in my PC.
My other complaint is the graphics. To be more precise, all the different shades of brown and occasional gray in the game. Everything is well modeled, detailed and visualized, but all the shades of brown... I need to see a different color!! And I don't mean neon greens from toxic waste or reds from laser beams! Just like the audio, seeing too much of it will start to bore you in a more visual sense. The DLC does provide some change to this though, but I can't help but wish a few places in the Capital Wasteland retained their pre-war greatness.
Fallout 3 retains it's fun after a few years of not playing and I'm gladI picked it back up, I got some new achievements and plan on getting more, I just wished that with the DLC included a few more audio and visual changes to spruce things up a bit.
