Battle Chess has been quoted as “a chess game for people who don’t like chess” and that sums it up perfectly. Bringing each piece to life by adding comical animations to them, moving across the board and violently attacking one another, quashing the stereotypes and vivifying what is now considered an old-fashioned board game. The best way to describe it would be to think back to the original Star Wars when C3PO and Chewbacca were playing 3D chess on the Millennium Falcon, or even Wizard Chess for the Harry Potter fans among us.
Depending what piece you move and what piece you plan on taking a different attack comes into play, for example: if you take a knight with a knight he will cut his enemy limb from limb until all that is left is a bloody mess, however if he gets close enough to take the queen he will cleverly dodge her incoming attacks and deflect her magic back upon her; transforming her into a harmless, miniscule dragon. Each of the games 35 animations are executed superbly well, with very little lag coming into effect.
If you are more of a traditionalist and aren’t really the type of person who enjoys the concept of a board game turned massacre then the game also offers the classic 2D format.
Battle Chess not only brought chess into the modern era with its over-the-top comical animations but it also got a younger generation of gamers involved. It almost makes me wonder whether releasing the game into today’s market; even as downloadable content would produce similar results.
