I wanted to like it, but I just wasn't feeling it. There are too many things that annoy me.
The game feels unbalanced and frustrating. I hate the health system for a start. For a little over half the game, you don't have much health. When you (inevitably) break out of stealth and into action, the game is fast and frantic, and all the health you do have depletes very quickly; as will the mountain of armour that you're constantly stockpiling and checking every inch of the levels for (which, by the way, gets old fast). This feels like it goes against the nature of the game, because it's an action-packed shooter with bullets whizzing from all angles. You're dual-wielding shotguns and chopping peoples arms off with one swing of your hatchet... But at the same time, you're vulnerable?? I know the story calls for it, but the story didn't need to call for it.
After a certain point, you get your health back, but it doesn't really get any better, because they just ramp up the number of enemies to compensate for it. They will pummel you with their hitscan bullets from a mile away, and there's very little feedback to give you an indication of where the bullets are coming from. Weapon switching, and switching to dual-wielding feel very sluggish too, which is also frustrating in the heat of the moment. They could have at least slowed down the action while you're navigating the weapon wheel like DOOM does. None of these problems are helped by lowering the difficulty, because the second-lowest difficulty has all the same problems, just to a lesser extent, and the lowest difficulty is so ridiculously easy there's no enjoyment to be had. This is actually about balance, how the gameplay just seems unpolished, and how it often... Isn't fun.
Most of the levels are much too short. They seem like they finish just as they're really getting started. You can expect long cutscenes book-ending the start and end of each level, and an interlude on your ship in-between levels (with more cutscenes). Don't get me wrong, the cutscenes are well made, and sometimes really funny too, but the levels are short enough that at a certain point I felt like I watching cutscenes more than I was playing the game, and I just started to get bored of that too.
There is a fun game buried somewhere underneath all this, but I found it too irritating in the end.
