A fantastic game at the time, and has moments of good fun today, but I don't think its aged very well. At the time, its selling point was "GTA in 3D", and that by itself was fresh, even revolutionary, so it didn't need much else. Playing it now though, after so many sequels and "clones", it doesn't really stand out. It feels like the game doesn't have a strong identity. The atmosphere of the world is indistinct, the map is bland and unmemorable, and many of the game's characters would fit that description too, at least when compared to the excellent characterisation of the subsequent games. The radio stations are limited, each only having a small selection of songs, and overall not a very good selection (you can tell they spent a lot more on music licenses in later games). I was honestly bored of the radio before I left the first island. Audio leveling is quite bad, and important sounds (such as dialogue) can easily get drowned out by unimportant sounds (such as traffic noises).
As for the core gameplay... The shooting and driving is okay. A bit janky, but you get used to it, and there is satisfaction to be drawn from its simplicity. But the world around you has quite a confusing layout, and with no way to view the whole map, and having to rely on just the tiny minimap in the bottom left corner, it can be difficult to find your way around. My biggest problem with the game though is that the mission design can be frustrating and repetitive, or just not give you a clear idea of what you're supposed to be doing. Towards the end of the game, I found more and more missions that were boring me, annoying me, or both; and I didn't end up finishing this playthrough.
This game had its day, and it deserved the critical acclaim it got at the time (for the most part), but its one of those things that is best left to history and fond memories. If you never played any games in the "3D" era of GTA, I recommend starting with Vice City. While the driving and shooting mechanics are almost identical in Vice City, everything else is so much better.
If you do play it, keep in mind that you'll need to put in a bit of work to get it running properly on modern systems. Check PCGamingWiki.
