RiME of the Ancient Mariner

Just in case you didn't get the reference, there it is.

RiME is beautiful, simple and gentle in its puzzle progression. There's no punishment or sharp cliff to fall off of in terms of mechanics or logic. You're a boy who has washed up on the beach of a Greek-style island, complete with ruins, wonders, ghosts and a very cute little fox who helps you along the way.

The emotional resonance is what carried me through this game, and it's a quiet game in the way you want it to be. The puzzles are engaging and dynamic without forcing you to keep a detailed journal of symbols, codes, noises and other such classic Myst cues. The control is simple - sometimes, too simple - and the jump mechanics are a little jerky, but I can forgive that in this case.

In a lot of ways, this game is what I wanted The Witness to deliver. It commits to a story that it reveals at a measured pace without a lot of cleverness or mental gymnastics in its structure. I played it free on PSN a few months ago, which also definitely influences the joy factor. Paying more than $15-$20 for this game would tip this into three-star territory.
