Darksiders is a third person action game and the first game from Virgil games. Darksiders follows the story of War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. He has been accused of starting the end war and destroying the human race; War has been stripped of his powers and given a second chance to find the true culprit. The story won't be the main reason to stay, but does a good job of enhancing the experience. The game is set after the destruction of man kind so the world is mostly empty but the game features a great art style.
Darksiders borrows a lot of game mechanics from games including God of War and The Legend of Zelda. The games combat takes the brutality and action of God of War with the insane abilities and with the finishing kills. The combat is smooth as well as the animations. Darksiders also takes the puzzle elements of The Legend of Zelda, in Darksiders dungeons are used to introduce new weapons by giving the player puzzles and a boss fight that utilises the weapon or item that has been acquired. Most of the puzzles are not very hard and neither are the boss fights, but there is a hints system yet the game does not help you very much.
The game will take around 15 hours and the game has 3 difficulty levels, a ton of items to collect and all of War's moves and weapons can be upgraded. On the normal difficulty I felt like the game suffered from difficulty spikes during the game. The first hour of the game is by far the worst part of the game due to the game being button mashy. Darksiders also suffers from cases of frame rate drops and screen tearing in certain areas, but it won't detract from the overall experience enough too hinder you enjoyment of this stellar action game.
Overall Darksiders offers a stellar third person action adventure that you should not miss if you like any of the these types of games despite a few flaws even minor, this is an excellent game for Virgil studios
