This game sure is fantastic and there is no question about that. A rogue like rhythm adventure that will be forever with you. It is extremely rewarding if you play it as it is suppose to be played but not doing so can lead you to the point of a rage quit which is not that often but it happens when you can’t beat zone 1 after 20 tries. Yes I’m not that good at this game.
The music and sound effects are probably the best thing in this game. Of course that was expected since its a rhytm based game but they really did a great job on the songs. You really feel the rhythm and you respond accordingly with your button clicks. There is no moment in the game that I was confused because the heart beat didn’t match the song’s tempo. Last but not least, the shopkeeper has an amazing voice.
The fun factor in this game is over 9000 and I really mean it. I enjoy it mainly because every enemy has an individual move or ‘dancing’ pattern which only leaves you with excitement while you try to counter their attacks with you own moves. In addition to that there is a Local Co-op mode which, to be honest, really got me excited. However, my excitement was soon lowered since the players have collision. I don’t say that this is necessarily a bad think but its really annoying to block your friend by mistake and get them killed. But don’t get me wrong I really like the idea of a Local Co-op but just put an option of turning off the collision.
The controls feel really good and they are extremely simple to remember. There are no confusing hotkeys that will make the user fall out of the rhythm of the game in order to figure them out. The gameplay is, what I believe, got this game so popular. It is unique and that makes the whole game amazing.
The graphics in this game are good. It kinda reminds me off Undertale which is a game I really liked as well. They are pretty and neat for both quality and performance purposes. The animations are good and smooth and the game does not require a good pc to play it on so that is a plus.
To be honest I didn’t really play this game for its story and to be extremely honest I didn’t expect this game to have a story at all. But it does and it’s awesome! I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say this. The cinematics and the story telling are great, plus the voice overs are suprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting so much focus on things like that by a rogue like game since most I’ve played didn’t even have a story.
To sum up, the game is astonishing and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fun of rogue like games in general. Even if you are not a fan of pixel art games like me that shouldn’t bother you since you will soon be lost in the Crypt of the NecroDancer.
