Professor Layton is a beautiful and charming game that shows post apocalyptic settings, large explosions, machismo, and the destruction of all life are not required to make a great game.
An intriguing tale plays out as the player completes a series of 120 puzzles. The puzzles are challenging but not overly difficult and useful hint coins can be found to buy hints in case the player gets stuck on a specific puzzle.
The game is presented by highly detailed artwork reminiscent of the Tin Tin novels and other children's literature. Upon completion of a chapter the player is also rewarded by some of the best cutscenes I've encountered on the DS.
The centerpiece of Layton's storytelling and atmosphere however lies with the score. Although not particularly varied, the music perfectly invokes the setting of the European countryside, and remains easy on the ears for all the hours required to finish the game.
The game is nicely rounded out by bonus features and the ability to hunt down remaining puzzles once the story is completed. I higly recommend Professor Layton to anybody looking for a puzzle game, adventure game, or escape from the constant barrage of sci-fi first person shooters.
