DICE is known for its Battlefield Series on the PC and Consoles, its also known for the realism and excellent Multiplayer Present in almost all of their games, The Latter of which is present in their latest entry to the Battlefield Series, Heroes.
The Previous Battlefield games have been heavy on realism and high quality graphics, Battlefield Heroes ditches these in exchange for a cartoony art style and arcadey type of gameplay, Whilst the graphics might initially bear a resembelance to Team Fortress 2 over time you notice the subtle differences that keep the game far apart from Valves hit Multiplayer Shooter.
Although the Score For Battlefield Heroes is VERY small, its single track consists of one of the most gleefull and catchy melodies ever Heard in a videogame.(And You Will continue to Whistle it long after you have stopped playing the game)
One of the Big Draws for Battlefield Heroes is how it is "Free 2 Play", This (For Once) is More or Less true and installing the game is as simple as installing a plugin to your Web Browser and Updating the client.
Whilst playing the game is Free, you have the ability to Pay Real Cash to give your Character Cosmetic Items ranging from Monacles and T-shirts to Friday the 13th Hockey Masks.
One of Battlefield Heroes Biggest Stengths is how it Merges Online Shooter with Online RPG elements, you Create a character from one of three classes-
- Gunner-This Character is your Heavy Weapons character capable of wielding a large variety of weapons as well as some offensive abilites.
- Soldier-This Character is your Primary Support character and is capable of several support abilities as well as an Area of Effect Heal.
- Kommando-The Commando is a combination of Team Fortress 2's Spy and Sniper Classes and is able to stealth strike as well as snipe players.
Other RPG elements are Present in Heroes such as levelling up and Experience Systems as well as skill trees and items.
The Item System In Battlefield Heroes is intresting as you dont buy items unless you Use Battlefunds(Real Money), instead you rent the weapons/Costumes for either a month or a week.
Note-Thankfully all weapons in the game are obtainable using the games Valour Points which are earned by playing the game.
These RPG elements are strongly complimented by shooter elements like Vehicles, whilst the Vehicle range is quite small the vehicles are very well balanced and fun to use.
While the game in its current state is very fun, it still suffers from server problems as well as other technical issues, to me these are only minor niggles that can easily be worked out for one of the most suprising Shooters of 2009.
