Less a game and more an interactive story Attack of the Friday Monsters is a short, concise fun tale and worth experiencing at least once. While it may not have the most memorable plot for the few short hours required to see the game to its conclusion its a fun and compelling experience.
As so much of the enjoyment to be had with the game comes from the story I’m reluctant to tell more the obvious. As the name suggests the main focus of the plot is the threat of the invading monsters who appear and fight outside of a small town in which our child protagonist, the 10 year old Sohta, has recently moved to. I daren’t give anymore away due to so much of the wonder of the game comes from running around exploring the small town and talking to other children and friendly (and one particularly strange) strangers.
Its not just run around and talk though as the game features collectible orbs which once you’ve gathered a set amount of grant you an additional card for the trading card game contained within the game. Effectively a modified version of rock, paper, scissors its a somewhat fun side distraction from the main game and considering that its entirely optional for the most part it, you can pretty much play it as much as you desire. Perhaps I spent a little too much time playing it and collecting all of the cards as soon I had mastered the art of battling the other children and could easily dominate any who dared step up to my challenge. Its relatively easy to conquer and master, child's play even, but as a optional side game it serves it purpose well and gives the game that little extra oomph it needs to ensure players can casually explore and go through the game at their leisure.
Taken as a small interactive story with some additional gameplay mechanics the game serves as an enjoyable little experience thats worth having. Whilst its not the greatest or most memorable story that you’ll play its short and concise enough to warrant seeing. You may not be dazzled by the gameplay or undergo a life changing experience with its story but for what it is and what its worth I’m glad that I went through it and believe that you should too.
