LEGO Rock Band sounded like a dumb idea the moment it was getting rumored and is still a weird idea to me. But, suprisingly, the whole LEGO universe isn't a bad place to make Rock Band more appealing to a younger audience. Still, this version of Rock Band has it's faults.
The whole point of this game is to make young kids want to play it. To do that, not only do you need the look that kids would like, which this game succeeds in, but you need the songs. This is where one of the faults of the game is. The track list is all over the place. You have popular artists like Bon Jovi and Queen, performing the crowd pleasing songs you would expect them to have. But there are other artists like The Kooks, The Primitives...have you ever heard of these groups? I haven't. Why are they in the game? It's supposed to be a family friendly list where everyone knows the songs, and yet they throw in stuff I haven't even heard of.
Another complaint that I have with the game is the story mode. It is structured similarly to the other Rock Band games. To reach new gigs though, you need to unlock vheicles to get you places. It takes away the sense that you're traveling the world. The story mode is also very linear, with little choice in what song you get to choose to preform and having to repeat songs for certain gigs. One thing that I did like about the story mode is that they used the LEGOs as a chance to be crazy and unrealistic as possible. Towards the end of the game you play a gig ON THE MOON. Enough said.
The gameplay is Rock Band. It's a music game. Just look at Rock Band as it is now, and replace everything there is with LEGOs. That's LEGO Rock Band.
All negaitves aside, there was some things that I liked about LEGO Rock Band. There are some fun songs to play, and it's tons of fun to play with friends and family. But there are too many flaws, such as the length of the game, the weird song choices, and the linear story mode, that make this one hard to reccomend. It doesn't really do anything for the genre, neither does it refine or impove anything from the past Rock Band games. If you're really interested in LEGO Rock Band, just rent it. You'll beat it in a week. If you want to buy it to import the songs, get it at a discounted price. It is not worth the $60. (3/5)
