Let’s get one thing out of the way: Borderlands 3 has one of the greatest gun-feel of any game ever, being able to rival Destiny in this particular area.
Shooting feels great and being a looter-shooter, it is awesome that the devs got that feel spot-on, as well as making sure there's plenty of guns to try out, each having its own weight and feel.
Gameplay and overall feel are this game's greatest strengths.
The art style is unchanged and the visuals are a lot better, but if you haven’t played Borderlands 2 in a while you wouldn’t notice it.
Having said that it’s all downhill from there.
The user interface is awful, making the in-game menus extremely hard to navigate due to poor performance and just bad design.
Speaking of the user interface, the map is basically useless, being clunky and poorly designed. One example that is particularly enraging is the fact that we cannot see our objectives mapped out, having to scroll one by one to see where it is on the map instead of being able to have a birds-eye-view of everything we can do on any given location.
The handling of the mini-map is also terrible with the terrain not matching the actual terrain you’re seeing in-game. Plus, as it stands, the game’s not optimized at all and does not run smoothly either on consoles or PC.
And then comes the kicker: the writing is appalling. It is as if the writers stuffed this game with jokes that kind-of landed on Borderlands 2, especially on the DLC, dialed it up to 11 and now every single character feels exactly the same: a sort of pseudo-witty, foul-mouthed, sarcastic know-it-all. And if that wasn’t enough, the story really tries to be edgy and up-with the times, revolving around irritating livestreamers but comes off as bland and even a bit cringy.
Short & Sweet:
If you want a great shooting experience and don’t mind the poor performance, the shallowness of the story and the overall bad writing give this game a go, but I would definitely recommend waiting and grabbing it on sale.
