Fresh puzzles combined with innovative gameplay

In a medium saturated with sequels, it is refreshing to play a game that embraces innovation and originality.  Sometimes original games don't reach the bar set by the numerous sequels in existence, but occasionally a game arises that should not be missed.  Zack & Wiki is one of those titles.  It is an adventure game of sorts, but the control mechanics and puzzles break boundaries set by previous adventure games.  Any Wii owner starving for an original title that utilizes the Wiimote in ways that don't involve waggle should take a look at this title.  During the course of the game, the main character Zack picks up a variety of tools that allow him to overcome obstacles.  He uses his sidekick Wiki to turn enemies into obstacles by shaking the Wiimote.  So there is a little bit of waggle, but the majority of the time you are using the Wii's controller in unique ways.  If you pick up a saw, you can make a back and forth horizontal motion to chop down a tree.   The tree could potentially be used for a bridge if there is a gap to cross.  The Wiimote is also used for sword fights; it is used as a tennis racket to launch projectiles, and it can be held horizontally to help your character stay balanced while crossing a tight rope.

One of Zack & Wiki's strong points is its unique use of the Wiimote, but it also breaks new ground with its puzzles.  Adventure gamers who have played Zelda games typically know what to expect in a new version.  There are some new tools, but many of the puzzles follow the same formula.  Zack & Wiki on the other hand really causes you to think outside of the box.  Tasks such as escaping from a prison require you to think before you commit to a step; otherwise, you might make a mistake that makes it impossible to complete the level.  Before tackling a level, it is necessary to plan and explore your options.  Sometimes, that won't be enough, and you'll have to resort to trial and error during the most excruciating puzzles.  For the most part though, it feels like a major accomplishment when you have tackled a level  that required a lot of thought.

Almost every aspect of Zack & Wiki is great, but there are a couple issues that might turn gamers off.  First of all, the pirate theme suits the game, but the art style and character names might not bode well with older gamers even though the difficulty at times could make them cry for mercy.  The other issue I have with the game are the sound effects.  Instead of having voices for the characters, Capcom decided to include repetitive, high-pitched sounds that will likely irritate most gamers.  These two issues hurt the game a little, but not enough to make me avoid the game.  Instead of complaining about why there aren't enough new innovative games for consoles, go purchase this game if you're up to tackling a new challenge.
