Heavy Rain is as innovative as it is breathtaking

The thing that really drives this game is the storyline. If you have any kind of curiosity, or find yourself drawn to complex yet mysteries plots, you will be drawn in pretty fast. We are talking pretty edge-of-your-seat and pretty heart-pounding, through all but the most apathetic points of the game. Due to the control system, and having to control pretty much every aspect of the characters' lives, we're talking about some pretty run-of-the-mill, taking a shower and shaving, everyday life parts of the game. These parts, which can be mundane, will happen from the get-go. However, an event that happens very quickly into the storyline will have you on the edge of the seat for the remainder of (and you possibly might have to force yourself to put the controller down for a while) the story.

What also drives this game is it's innovation. The control system, while simplistic and one-dimensional (in a way), is a very fresh, intuitive and original control method. Aside from the control system, there is the gripping character development you would expect from an excellent story-driven adventure game. Although, it's hard to tell you exactly how this is done without giving away spoilers. Rest assured that the story will draw you in and you will feel SOMETHING for any one of the characters in the story. Whether it's pity, or admiration. Contempt or disdain, it's hard to pay attention to the storyline and not feel... something. What else is great about the story you may ask? Well, it doesn't end until the game is finished. I may sound like Captain Obvious but, without trying to give too much away, I will tell you that your choices affect the outcome in the end, and whether any of the characters you control succeed in what they are doing or not, the story continues until the plotline-twisted, climactic ending (or perhaps ANTI-climactic endingS, since I've only seen three out of MANY).

So this all sounds amazing yes? If not, I'm not doing my job properly and you should just buy the game to spite me, since it is pretty awesome. So what is left to ask but, what is bad or negative about this game? Well I think the only thing that is it's *real* downfall is a part of it's strength. The control system. Yes, it's intuitive. Yes, it's innovative. Yes, I really did enjoy the control-system as a WHOLE. The downside was that it left little to, well, choice. Yes, in many cases there was a choice to be made. Every step of the way you made a choice that would effect the outcome of the story. But unfortunately, it left a perhaps a little to be desired. Like, three choices instead of two. The thing I really liked about the downside of all this is that they FINISHED the game. What do I mean by that? Well, especially in adventure games, it happens so often that the character has two choices (if it's a decent game) and option three can't even be interacted with. This game? Well you have two choices, and when you go for the third, a little cut-scene might play where the character interacts with something and you are revealed why it wasn't really a choice. Or perhaps the character explains it in his thoughts, which you can hear by pressing the L2 button and perhaps a corresponding dialogue. That's what is really great about this game, it is absolutely downright immersive. You get to see what the character is thinking, feeling, hearing and saying. If you are like me, it will draw you in.

Overall I give this game 4.5 stars, and I would highly recommend this game to others!
