Giant Bomb - a website about video games and the people that make them

Suffers from poor management, but is still pretty darn fun.

I was tempted to review this game a long time ago but I figured I would give the time to evolve and improve as the game has an incredibly small amount of members and is still in open beta as far as I know. First off, this is a Battlefield game so anyone who has played games in this series before sort of knows what to expect when it comes down to the core game play, however the mechanics and appearance are completely different as you can tell by first glance, making for a completely different experience.

I give this tank a thumbs-up.
First off there are two factions in the game, national and royals, you can immediately tell what these are based off of just by looking at the name, both contain the same three classes you can pick from when creating a character, solder, gunner and commando. The solder primarily serves as both a medic and a combat class, providing heals and generally throwing a ton of grenades at the opposing team. The gunner is a medium to short range class which tends to take the fight to the enemy, protects his team mates with shields and tosses kegs at people he doesn't like. Fun! Lastly there's the commando which seems to receive a lot of flack in the community because as the name suggests, this class tends to stick to the shadows and pop out at the worst moments, reminds me when I was a young teenager... Hold up, where was I?

Oh yeah, the objective on all of the maps bar one is to capture flags whilst draining the enemies reinforcements by kicking the crap out of them. As for an added incentive when you capture flags your reinforcements go down slower whilst the enemies go down faster, making for incredibly fast matches when you have a team that absolutely steam rolls the other.

Unfortunately one team getting absolutely decimated happens a lot more than it should do which can be incredibly frustrating as you head from match to match only to be victim of spawn camping time and time again which isn't exactly that fun. This tends to be because of the ranking system as you gain experience whilst you play leading to games where players of lower rank can be put into matches with people that have the maximum rank which is thirty, who have a ton more abilities than you do and aren't afraid to use them on your fragile newbie character.

The driver doesn't seem to be too bothered about the explosions.

Apart from the abysmal match making there are no major problems with the actual game, it is incredibly fun and the cartoon inspired art style gives the game a very relaxed feel even when the action is fast and frantic, it's the people managing the game that let the entire experience down.

A major part of this game is customizing your character by purchasing battlefunds, similar to Microsoft points and other similar unnecessary virtual currency points which serve no purpose other than to lock the consumer into purchasing more points than they need to buy the items they want. A couple months ago different costumes were introduced monthly and touted as exclusive purchases, once you bought these they would never be in the store again. I thought that was pretty awesome as it rewarded veteran players and gave a major incentive to purchase these items, but then suddenly with every costume they released they used the word 'exclusive' less and less, instead calling them 'unique', leading the change to making once unique items available to purchase on the store again. This upset the majority of players and led to a major backlash by the veteran members of the community which was met by... Silence. No member of the Battlefield team replied to any post, instead instructing the moderators to lock any thread with complaints in. That is not the way you manage a community and is definitely not the way to treat paying customers.

Then came the weapons which provide critical damage bonuses at the price of 560 battlefunds, putting players who do not spend money at a major disadvantage and proving that the team managing the game no longer had any care for their previous promise of never giving paying players an advantage over the free ones. What's worse is that a month before they released these weapons, they released the original weapons with a different flashy skin on them which I gladly purchased, but now these new weapons with their critical bonuses have made my previous weapon obsolete.

Not only is the management poor but the support is even worse with over half an hour wait times to speak to support most of the time and some of the time you'll just be outright ignored, which, once again isn't the way to treat paying customers.

When all is said and done this game is incredibly fun and free to boot, but recent changes have made the game less desirable to play and makes you sort of wonder when the next game changing items will be introduced which forces you to think "is this actually worth it?" for the time being, I think so.
