There are a lot things of Quantum of Solace: The Video Game that
make you think the opposite of what the game is overall. It looks like
a first-person shooter, but 8/10 of the time you're behind cover in
third-person view. Another thing that gets you fooled is the title. I
thought, for a sequel that had WAY more action scenes than Casino
Royale ended up having less chapters to play. Apparently, Activision
decided to have Casino Royale's sequences to be the most of the
chapters. One last thing that somehow could confuse people is the
marketing of "the new GoldenEye 007". That's false. It's certainly
better than past Bond games following GoldenEye 007 (from N64).
The game starts off immediately after Casino Royale, then fast-forwards to parts of Quantum of Solace, then goes back to the past of the events of Casino Royale, fast-fowards to certain parts of Casino Royale, and finally goes back to the present time of Quantum of Solace when you're at the Eco Hotel (the hotel that Michael Bay was clearly the architect). Speaking of Michael Bay, right off the bat, why is there so many hazards or explosives right next to enemies? After popping out of cover to shoot an enemy, I (honestly) saw a fire extinguisher, a propane tank, an explosives box, and a circuit box ALL right next to this person. Just to piss off the game, I decided not to shoot the explosives.
There are a lot of elements mashed together that while interesting, not as effective as the game developers think so. First-person view you'll be in every 2 minutes, long quick-time-events (ex: God of War) feel slow, and hacking (where you use the D-Pad to make a code) is repetive but easy. The game occasionally breaks out of its shooter trappings into sequences where you'll have to shimmy along the outsides of buildings, or keep your balance as you run along a narrow beam. The most rewarding mechanics of the game is trying to be stealthy, trying to avoid cameras or enemies- not to set off more and more enemies. Stealth in a James Bond game makes you feel more like a spy- which apparently in the films Bond does not follow.
Anyways- there are moments from Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale that you can re-enact. It's exiting to play as Bond in one of your favorite moments from either movies- my personal favorite is doing the foot-chase from Casino Royale. Now the problem with these sequences is- they last less than 3 minutes. I timed how much the foot-chase lasted and it does not last long as I had hoped. You get de-brief meetings (like Call of Duty 4, but less exiting as well) that describe a moment from a film- that YOU CANT PLAY IN. For example, from Quantum, you and Olga Kurylenko jump out of the plane- the developers should have taken that opportunity as a gameplay-minigame. But somehow they even manage to make the "Poison" scene from Casino Royale boring.
The graphics are all right- having to see Daniel Craig when taking cover all the time, it's a pretty good model. The other characters? Crap. Everyone except M or Bleeding Eye Asthma Villain looks good- they manage to make Olga Kurylenko (sexist woman compared to Eva Green) her character's photo (which you see 10 times) so ugly, and Eva Green (the most interesting Bond Girl ever) and her character's photo AND model ugly. During the cut-scenes, characters move very stiff. There really isn't much to say about multi-player, you can tell Activision really tried hard to make the multi-player just as good as GoldenEye007's. One of the additions is unlocking and buying weapons, and another is modes related to the Golden Gun. Multi-player is empty- you can fire your gun about and by luck you'll get a kill without trying. Yeah...
Quantum of Solace: The Video Game is an exceptional shooter- it's not great but it's certaintly not bad. The single-player can get boring and the multi-player might as well not exist as it does not make an impact on this game's longevity. Really, there are more entertaining shooters that have more variety than this game- which is sad 'cause a lot of the elements that should have worked here doesn't quite hold up.
