The story begins after the events of Mortal Kombat Armageddon. As Shao Kahn is about to finish Raiden off, he sends a message to his past self saying "he must win". Throughout the story Raiden attempts to decipher and understand the true meaning of his future self's warning, thus changing and altering the original events in the timeline. As some events change due to Raiden's efforts, unforeseen repercussions are also met by his actions...

The story mode takes note from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe where you take on a character and watch and play through their progression in the story and as their story chapter completes you take on another... Sometimes you are forced to fight one on one matches, or one on two.
Aside from Mortal Kombat's rich Story Mode, Mortal Kombat also offers many other awesome single player modes such as the Challenge Tower, Arcade Mode, Test Your Luck, Test Your Sight, etc. In Challenge Tower you are to take on challenges (currently 300 total although it has been mention that more is possible through DLC) such as landing specific specials, certain number of hits, hitting certain areas of the body, performing certain combos, performing fatalities, etc etc. Through Challenge Tower, players learn and utilize different skills and strengths from each character as they progress through all the challenges. Through the Test Your Luck mode, players literally test their luck on the slots which will either grant you, your opponent or both random status effects/buffs/debuffs such as Narcolepsy (where the person inflicted with this status effect will randomly fall "asleep" throughout the match), Armor (where you gain defense boost and are not easily interrupted), Armless Kombat (where you cannot use any skills/attacks that involves your arms) and many more. This game is made so that you can learn and become better at it, through its challenge tower and tutorials, fighting game fans and casual gamers can get right into!
Additionally, this game also offers a good chunk of online multiplayer modes where you can challenge other players to a tag or single match, and engage in a King of the Hill mode. King of the Hill offers players at home to relive the arcade experience where you can watch other players matches and make side comments as you watch matches and wait your turn.
