I recently picked this up and I've logged several hours of play time at this point, but I've barely scratched the surface of this game. The main premise here is that you are a guild of adventurers (entirely created and customized by you) trying to get to the top of the Yggdrasil labyrinth to see what's up there. You are tasked with making a map of the dungeon as you go, which I assume comes into play in the story at some point(?) but at first seems mostly to help you survive and get around. Random battles in the labyrinth gain you experience and items, which you sell at the shop to make money. Accepting quests from the bar will also net you items and gear.
The game is tough, but in more of an “oops, I forgot to pay attention to what I was doing” kind of way. There are quite a few disproportionately strong monsters, but as long as you don’t get yourself in a big hurry you can avoid them until you’re good and ready to fight them. There’s an auto-battle function, but I’ve found that you have to assess the situation carefully before using it or you could find yourself unexpectedly being beaten to a pulp. Fortunately you can stop it just in case you start getting in trouble.
The one major negative for me in this game is that everything is in first-person. You never get to see your character in action and all the battles are menu based, with the monsters shaking a little to show that you hit them. It’s not enough to make me hate the game, but it would be nice to see what my party looks like occasionally.
All in all my first impressions of this game are great, and it looks like I’ll be spending a lot of hours on it. Just remember, don’t leave home without your Warp Wire, or you might wake up dead!
