The character design. The music. The steampunk setting. Every character was "the protagonist." FFVI took what started in FFIV and extrapolated it to its fullest potential. This was a completely immersive and magical experience. The best gaming experience I've ever had, bar none.
The PERFECT platformer. The only one that matters. The first time playing this game, it blew my fucking mind. It still kind of does.
The first game I remember having a cohesive, narrative plot. It really told a story in cinematic fashion. I was actually invested in the characters of a video game!
What can I say about LttP that hasn't been said before? THIS game is the one that should've had the golden cart.
This game has been out for 20+ years and my friends and I are still playing it. Why? Because we are still uncovering new and lucrative trade routes, finding new, better sailors, and there is NOTHING like this game.
The first game I really got excited about after the high watermark of FFVI. I immediately fell in love w/the Toriyama characters, fantastic soundtrack, and time traveling antics. A very linear and shallow game by today's standards, it was a pretty great JRPG for its time.
This game is way more fun than an airline business sim has any right to be. It is surprisingly deep and addictive. Don't forget to turn the animations off.

"The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace." BULLSHIT! Lot of good, unnerving, lonely space action in this one. Fantastic exploration. A huge improvement on the original, probably the first example of the now eponymous genre "Metroid-vania."
Really the first time I was ever exposed to the whole cyberpunk genre. This game doesn't have much replay value, but that first playthrough is fantastic. I really dug the dialog and keyword system; it was very innovative for a console game of that time.
