2022 still had shutdowns from the pandemic where I live, but it also felt like the year that life returned to some kind of normality, particularly as the year went on. I was able to maintain a decent amount of gaming time as I balanced it into my life, and these are the games that I most enjoyed from the year.

As a follow-up to the stellar 2018 reboot, Ragnarok had a lot to live up to, and it largely delivers on this. Great action, a pretty compelling story and some amazing set pieces make this a wonderful game. However, it felt just shy of accomplishing what I expected from the setup that 2018's God of War left, and I couldn't help but be slightly disappointed in what could have been done here regarding the story beats. Still, a stellar game and magnificent entry.
Another ambitious follow-up to a pretty great predecessor, and one that picks up its story pretty much right from where the first Horizon left off. Forbidden West continues the action pace and intriguing world building of Zero Dawn, and improves the action and enemy types in the effort. The story is not quite the level of interest of the first game and it still does not quite reach the levels of excellence it might, but what a fabulous action game with a great open world and some meaningful side quest content as well.
I remain a sucker for the Pokemon series, and that may never be more true than with this latest 9th generation entry. The game is a technical mess, with issues that are absolutely unacceptable for a modern big game of this scale and importance. And yet, I found myself enduring them and having great fun as I played the adventure to completion. Great new creatures, intriguing battles and a flawed attempt at an open world setting make this a memorable game besides the host of technical problems.
I just wanted a new take on the Dead Space formula, and was hyped considering the team behind this. The game looks visually stunning, but that is pretty much the only positive thing I can say. Terrible combat, dull enemy types, a pretty awful setting that fails to live up to its potential, and a meandering weak story with no reason or motivation to care about anything that happens. Terrible game that happens to have among the best graphics I have seen.
