My Top Ten Games of 2016

by thesilentgod

Another year that I had to play catch-up on after the fact, but some absolute gems and from my perspective there was no single runaway winner for GOTY, which keeps things very interesting for overall game quality.

Stardew Valley

1. Stardew Valley

What can I say about Stardew Valley. It is a farming simulator, but it is so much more. The story of the game involves leaving behind the stress of modernity to return to a more simple, authentic and present life, and the game truly feels like that. It is all so simple, but the depth of the mechanics, the ease with which the game embraces you, and how relaxing and fun it all is. Wow, what a magical experience and game this is.

Total War: Warhammer

2. Total War: Warhammer

Great total war campaign style that I know and love combines with the Warhammer Fantasy setting to create one of the most compelling strategy games ever made. Genuinely unique factions, battles that are a complete spectacle and the sheer scale makes this one a must play. It was so fascinating to see these races and factions brought to life on the screen and battle each other in a setting that I have a lot of love for. Such scale and energy brought to Warhammer alongside the wonderful Total War formula pushes this one over the edge into true greatness.

Doom

3. Doom

Thrilling singleplayer campaign with smooth and intesne gameplay at its beating heart. Doom is a little long but its not afraid to push players with waves of aggressive demons and it does not let up its rollercoaster ride. Perfect example of what single player shooters could, and should, be in modern gaming.

4. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Excellent characters with natural interactions that build on the themes of the entire series and stunning visuals. However, bullet sponge enemies, dull combats and a pace that is largely boring left this something of a disappointment for me.

Inside

5. Inside

Haunting visuals combine with a subtle audio and simple but pleasing gameplay mechanics to create this dark joy. Some very chilling sequences and level design take it to the gold standard smaller games. The major complaint I have is the sudden and halting ending to an otherwise great experience.

Firewatch

6. Firewatch

First game of the year I played to completion. Very good middle section, with some strong character interactions. Disappointing ending and story conclusions, but overall one of the stronger "walking simulators" I have played.

Pokémon Sun/Moon

7. Pokémon Sun/Moon

As a major fan of the series I was left pretty disappointed about Sun/Moon. It struggled to play smoothly on the normal 3DS model, and the lack of the traditional gym structure alongside some pretty questionable new creature designs left me fairly unhappy. I actually didn't finish this one, and that is the first time I have failed to finish one of the main line game entries in the series. Not a bad game at all but significant let down compared to X/Y.
