As we wrap up 2024 I look at the games I played this year and once again struggle to actually complete 10 that even released. It was definitely a less stacked year than the pretty incredible 2023, but there were actually a few gems that I really enjoyed when I got time to play. Here are my favourites from 2024.

My expectations were pretty much rock bottom here. Silent Hill has not been good for years, arguably decades. What chance was there for a remake of the greatest game in the series and the likely defilement of my favourite horror game ever. Well, I was wrong. It is not perfect, and I think it misses a few things from the original, but Bloober did a fantastic job on this remake. So impressive from its atmosphere and sound design to its recapture of the vast majority of the horror and atmosphere. Silent Hill is back, and I hope this is only the first in a series of quality projects for the series going forward.
While this is very much aimed at me as a fan of the tabletop game, this sequel is an absolute triumph. Great world building in the tradition of just throwing the player into its setting and letting them learn by living the experience, and the combat is ruthless and old school in its design. The story is not the focus here, but everything from the music to the aesthetic design of the world are just absolutely delivered. You feel like an Astartes as you carve your way through the Tyranid swarms, and most importantly the game is extremely fun to play.
Premier example of how a remaster should be done. It is so energising to see the original Soul Reaver brought to a modern platform and made such a pleasure to play, and Soul Reaver 2 is a nice bonus to have attached even if it is not the main event in my mind of this package. A pity that Defiance was not included but I cannot complain as the quality of this release is exceptional and I hope it points to a resurrection for this phenomenal world.
