Game of the Year 2015

by monkeyking1969

My final list, and in rational order. This was a good year for games. Far fewer big games came out BROKEN or HALF-MADE. More games actually had a cogent narrative that made sense or was useful in creating a world or providing a point of view. Happy Holidays folks!

Life Is Strange

1. Life Is Strange

Finished ep.5 and despite not ending as strong the overall game is a WONDER! This game is easily talked about in real terms for best story & characters this year. Life Is Strange might not win GOTY, but OMG it IS part of the discussion.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

This is my second so far. Despite some issues, this game is very solid in thought and execution. I love the world, the tone, and the way the game works. Controls needed and still need help, but an excellent demostration of world building.

Until Dawn

3. Until Dawn

I'm just shocked it was so good. I expected it would be better than people would give it credit for...but damn they made a really fine game

Her Story

4. Her Story

A strong script to bedrocks an simple yet empowering core game mechanic. It has great use of the long lost art of FMV, thus making Her Story is the most unique game this year. (In this era of perfomace capture...what isn't FMV...think about it.)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

5. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Yeah, I think Kojima is a sexist ass. Yeah, I think his stories are shit, not bat shit crazy...just shit. But, this game is polished and has something going on that matters.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

6. Rise of the Tomb Raider

Not a Tomb Raider game in my opinion, but a good action adventure game. It is a shame they needed to kill everything special about the old property to make this.

Super Mario Maker

7. Super Mario Maker

Not my favorite style of game. Nor, by any scale, as far reaching or as creative as other "users created" games of years past. However, a very strong entry that was used very well by fans because of simplicity. Just not my style of game...but obviously good.

SOMA

8. SOMA

Increasingly, I like a game that does something, says something or means something. What SOMA does introduce is an intriguing self-awareness survival-horror story that makes you question certain actions as you explore what it means to be “alive”.

Rocket League

9. Rocket League

Not a complex game, and not even a very creative game. But props to a team at seeing this was a game and executing the idea perfectly. Likely the BEST football game out this year.

The Order: 1886

10. The Order: 1886

Ends up near the bottom...but hey look an UNBROKEN game that works. Just wish it was a bit fuller in the story. Why this above Fallout? Why this above Batman? Why this above Halo, CoD, and Dying Light? Because this game beyond all those listed above 'gave a damn' and tried something. Bataman was just more of the same and not as good as the first two games. Fallout 4 is just made like shit...as always a broken game released as a AAA game. Halo was meh, do people even remember that came out? The Order 1886 was solid, it coudl have done more but ist was solid.
