Was hard for me to decide between Zelda and this for the top spot, but Mario gets the edge. Playing this game brought me pure joy, something this year definitely needed.
For the first time in a long time, Nintendo truly reinventined one of its core franchises..and damn does it work. The sense of exploration in this beautiful, and at times haunting, world is something I've never experienced in a game before.
I've only played about 8 hours of this so far, and it's on a standard Xbox One (which is probably the worst way to play it at this point)...but I'm still loving it. It's a brand new multiplayer experience, bringing new kinds of action and, more importantly, intense quietness. It's a multiplayer game that produces amazing moments of triumph or failure, moments that you want to share with your friends.
Ubisoft went back to the drawing board, and came back with the best Assassin's Creed game since AC II...or maybe it's the best one ever. It fine-tunes the traversal and stealth action that you want from an AC game, and places it in an interesting, dense, vivid world I haven't seen in a game before.
I don't watch South Park, but I remain impressed and entertained with the RPG games. Matching the art style remains impressive, and the gameplay is my perfect balance of RPG mechanics and more casual play style.
This game is full of unforgettable moments, one after the other. It's too bad the actual shooting is kind of bad...playing this game was less enjoyable than the first one, though I can't really place what changed to cause that.
My experience with Destiny 2 unexpectedly followed the first game...I played the campaign, got to level cap, and immediately became uninteresed in continuing with any of the end-game content. I'm not sure why...maybe I just don't want to dedicate that time when I could play something else. But what I did play of Destiny 2 was great, a good polish on the solid groundwork of the first.
A perfect Switch game, this kept me company during a lot of work travel this year. Great loop of exploration and upgrading. Love the art style and music too.
The look of this blows me away. Still can't believe this came out and is a real functioning game with that art style. Actually playing the game didn't grab me in a huge way (though I need to go back and play more...), but it's an achievement that I can appreciate even with a quick taste.
Insane that this crossover exists, and insane that this XCOM-lite is actually kind of good. The traversal and puzzle-solving outside of battles wore thin enough to cause me to not finish the game, but the squad-based tactics shooter aspect is real fun.
