Best of 2009

by flipyap

This is looking a whole lot like a list of all 2009 games I have played...
Things that didn't make the cut: Borderlands, Torchlight, Trash Panic, Noby Noby Boy and Street Fighter IV.

Showing 1-10 of 10 items

Shadow Complex

1. Shadow Complex

Chair followed their Undertow - a game that was far too expensive at the price of free, with one of the most impressive "downloadable games" yet. They took the brilliant Metroid/Castlevania blueprint and turned it into something I can finally enjoy.

Halo 3: ODST

2. Halo 3: ODST

It's Halo 3 without the bad parts, and with enough tiny gameplay twists to make it feel like its own thing. The only retail game on the list without any obvious, notable flaws in the gameplay.

Assassin's Creed II

3. Assassin's Creed II

Interesting evolution of the original concept. Different from the original in so many ways (from the mood to gameplay), it feels like a separate game, remaining a part of a bigger whole almost "behind the scenes". Can't think of another franchise that has more potential than this. I hope they won't screw it up.

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City

4. Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City

DLC that expanded the core game's world like no other, creating a really special kind story in this medium.

Afrika

5. Afrika

I'm cheating here! I played the Asian version released before this year, but since it's a 2009 game in the US of A, I'm going to put it here, because who else would? It's special. As ugly and cheaply made it may be, there's nothing else like it. (On a similar note, I had to force myself not to put Braid on here)

Flower

6. Flower

Beautiful, abstract and (for the most part) serene. There aren't nearly enough games like it.

Eufloria

7. Eufloria

It's a flower-based space empire simulator real time strategy game. Do I have to say anything else?

Brütal Legend

8. Brütal Legend

Placed it on the list because of the way it integrates music into the plot and world of the game.

The Beatles: Rock Band

9. The Beatles: Rock Band

The closest thing we got so far to a documentary in video game form (yet still very far from its true potential. I would like to see Harmonix give it a second try)

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

10. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Probably my favorite game of the year (if not one of all time favorites)... until I got to the final section, when the game became as tedious and badly designed as the mediocre original. If my PS3 blew up before the final boss, this would be #1.
