Red Faction: Guerrilla

1. Red Faction: Guerrilla

Definitely my favourite open world game. Although this game doesnt have the best combat mechanics, nothing beats the feeling of swinging that future sledgehammer and bringing down buildings piece by piece. Such a great addition to an already great series.

Grand Theft Auto IV

2. Grand Theft Auto IV

This is the most well rounded open world game bar none. The amount of polish is outstanding, attention to detail is second to none. This game raised the bar for "next gen" games of every kind. It is a landmark game for noteriety and sales, and does not disappoint. It is engaging in every aspect from start to finish. I look back on this game as much a piece of art as it is enjoyable to play.

Just Cause 2

3. Just Cause 2

The grapple-to-anything plus parachute travel mechanic sets this game apart from any other open world games. It has never been easier to traverse open world games over short distances or long.

Just Cause

4. Just Cause

An overlooked introduction to the more polished second entry. These games are not necessarily of high production value but have a lot of charm.

The Saboteur

5. The Saboteur

This game is brimming with style, from the use of black and white versus color and the tongue-in-cheek humor and characters to the menus. The shooting and stealth/disguise mechanic really made this game enjoyable. The ability to climb was a nice feature but not as well done as Assassins Creed 2 which came out around the same time.

Borderlands

6. Borderlands

This is pretty much the game to play if you like first person shooters with rpg elements built in. The combat is the best part about this game and its largely in part to the nearly endless number of weapons that can be collected. This combined with an XP system and character perks and skill tree, along with a unique art style set this game apart as one of the best.

Fallout 3

7. Fallout 3

This is and was the deepest and one of the best games I have ever played. The feeling of control and freedom in this game is incredible. You can go anywhere and do anything. At least it feels that way. After 60 hours I still can go into that game and go somewhere I've never been before, meet someone I've never met before, or do something i've never done before. This game also has a great selection of DLC.

Crackdown

The Godfather II

9. The Godfather II
