Generally, I'm not a big fan of open-world games; they tend to bore me with their vast open-ended premise whereas I would rather play games with a linear path, finish the game and move on to the next one. However, there are some games that have caught my attention for many reasons and here the are - listed in order.

The most impressive open world game to date. The level of depth in GTAV is just astounding - how did Rockstar Games manage to make a believable city is beyond me. That's why it's on the top of the list.
I never thought Metal Gear and sandbox would ever work until this game came out and blew our minds.
