id Tech 4

1. id Tech 4

This is the first game engine that really got me interested in the technicality of games; that is why id Tech 4 is on top of the list. It may not be the most popular engine but in my opinion, the games that utilized this technology still holds up to this very day. Notable Games: - DOOM 3 - Prey - Quake 4 - Wolfenstein (2009)

id Tech 3

2. id Tech 3

A lot of great games in the early 00's were made with id Tech 3, in particularly American McGee's Alice. Notable Games: - Quake III: Arena - American McGee's Alice - Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast - Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.²

Unreal Engine 3

3. Unreal Engine 3

Unreal Engine 3 was when games reached a significant milestone in terms of visuals. Not only that, it was one of the first engine to be made available commercially not just for AAA developers but hobbyists as well. It was a stroke of genius. Makes me wonder why id Software didn't do that in the first place. Notable Games: - Alice: Madness Returns - BioShock: Infinite - Batman Arkham Trilogy - Dishonored - Gears of War - Killer Is Dead

Unity Engine

4. Unity Engine

What can be said about Unity that hasn't been said already? With its appropriate name, Unity really did unite all developers alike and proved a point that anyone can make games. However, that freedom came with a price thanks to asset flippers and con men who dared make broken games and sell them to us. Thank goodness the likes of Digital Homicide is no more. Notable Games: - République - Shadowrun Returns - Hitman Go - Firewatch - Superhot - Cuphead

5. Build Engine

When you see the games, you know exactly which engine it was made from. Ken Silverman really shook the world with its intuitive design and the influence it had to the gaming community. Notable Games: - Duke Nukem 3D - Ken's Labyrinth - Shadow Warrior - Blood
