Best of 2016

There's a good chance Overwatch and Thumper would've been on here if I had played them before the end of the year.

The Witness

1. The Witness

A mysterious island with lots of obscure secrets to uncover. The puzzles are clever and provide a good challenge. I still don't fully understand what's going on and I'm happy to leave it that way.

RimWorld

2. RimWorld

Definitely the most addictive game of 2016 for me. I played almost 200 hours of this awesome survival sim. Whenever things go horribly wrong I immediately want to start over and learn from my mistakes.

Doom

3. Doom

A really awesome, fast-paced, and brutal action game. I don't think anyone expected a new Doom to be this good. They succeeded in modernizing Doom.

Dark Souls III

4. Dark Souls III

I think the Souls formula is getting a bit old and predictable. Despite that, I still really enjoy the gameplay and I loved exploring the new environments of this game.

Stardew Valley

5. Stardew Valley

This game takes all the best elements of Harvest Moon and builds on them with crafting, decorating, and light combat. It feels like the true sequel to the original Harvest Moon that we never got. I wish it was easier to automate some of the more repetitive tasks though.

Inside

6. Inside

Creepy, dark, and dystopian. It feels like a very economical puzzle platformer -- every puzzle is fresh and interesting. The ending is weird and unexpected yet fits the tone of the game perfectly.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice

7. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice

One of the better recent Ace Attorney games. Aside from one case that feels completely out of place the whole game feels connected and takes you for a fun ride. I hope they can mix up the formula a bit more next time. It might be time for some new characters?

Cities: Skylines

8. Cities: Skylines

A great city builder with a lot of freedom. It's both too easy in that you can survive for a long time even as you're making bad decisions and too difficult in that when things go wrong it's not always clear what you did wrong.

Rez Infinite

9. Rez Infinite

Rez is still amazing. Area X feels like a true new Rez level (compared to Child of Eden, which felt completely off). I haven't been able to play it in VR yet.

Firewatch

10. Firewatch

Beautiful visuals but otherwise lacks substance. The setting and premise aren't explored as much I would've liked.
