GOTY 2023

by marblecmoney

Old games I loved this year:

  • Disco Elysium (2019) - My actual game of the year.
  • Judgement (2018) - I haven't finished it yet, but I've played enough of it to know I love its cast of characters. The mini-games are pretty fun too!
  • PlateUp! (2022) - Getting together every week or two to play this with my friends has been a blast for almost the entire year.

Games I'm bummed I didn't get to (yet):

  • Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon

Alan Wake II

1. Alan Wake II

Just a fantastic game. So creative. I loved the characters and the story and the atmosphere. I wouldn't say I'm a Remedy super fan (I never played the original Alan Wake for example) but as a big fan of Max Payne 1 & 2, this game played into my nostalgia for those in the best possible way. The way it ties into Control and the larger Remedy-verse is super fun as well.

Baldur's Gate 3

2. Baldur's Gate 3

This easily could have been my #1 game in any other year. The length of the game wound up taking a little bit of my enthusiasm for the early sections a bit, though. A few hours into act 3 fatigue set in and I was just ready to be done with the game. It didn't help that act 3 felt a bit less polished than the first two acts. Still a fantastic game overall, though. I really enjoyed my time with it.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

3. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

This was actually my first time really playing one of the beat-em-up style Yakuza games. After really loving 7, and starting Judgement earlier this year I knew I had to give this one a real shot. I think the shorter length helped me avoid getting burned out on side content. I really loved the story in this one.

Cyberpunk 2077

4. Cyberpunk 2077

The Phantom Liberty DLC, specifically. It felt like a shorter, tighter version of all the things I liked about the main game.

Counter-Strike 2

5. Counter-Strike 2

Counter-Strike 2 is very similar to CS:GO, but its release was a catalyst for a bunch of my CS:GO playing friends to get back into the game. I've had a lot of fun playing with them again. I don't have much to say about the game really. Counter-Strike remains a great game.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

6. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

A fantastic Star Wars game that was unfortunately weighed down by bad performance on PC for me. I put up with the frame rate stutters because I really liked the cast of characters, both returning and new (Turgle!!!). I'm a Star Wars dork. You give me a decent-to-good Star Wars game and I'm going to like it. The combat and exploration were pretty fun, too!

EA Sports FC 24

7. EA Sports FC 24

I don't really know what makes a good FIFA/EA FC game. I only play with friends, and we only play the online clubs mode. I put over 100 hours into this year's game, though. It's a great game to hop on while you chat with your friends.

Granblue Fantasy: Versus Rising

8. Granblue Fantasy: Versus Rising

I could have easily put Street Fighter 6 in this slot, too. That was another fighting game in the long line of fighting games I think could be "the one" that I really get into. Having just come out, Granblue is the current "one" of those. This game is fun! I like playing it with my friend! I hope I wind up playing more of it than I probably actually will.

Lethal Company

9. Lethal Company

This game is very new, and I don't know how long it will stay entertaining. For now, though, I'm having a lot of fun with it! Discovering how all the items work and how the monsters behave is very fun, and the proximity chat and overall sound design is so good!

Remnant II

10. Remnant II

I can't say I thought Remnant II was necessarily an outstanding game, but it was still pretty good. In co-op with two of my friends I had a lot of fun. I wish there were more games in this genre with full campaign co-op.
