Obscure Fighting Games That Are Worth Some Attention

by jeff

The mid-1990s were a pretty special time in gaming. The PlayStation was everywhere, and mod chips were becoming common. This opened me up to a world of crazy-ass import games. Since I happened to have something of a budget that I could put toward acquiring and reviewing imports, I went out of my way to just buy stuff that looked interesting to me... like 2D fighting games starring anime high-school girls.

These days, import games are rarely this cool, I guess because the Japanese market isn't what it used to be, and anything that has half a chance of being appealing to the US audience makes it over here in some form, usually simultaneously.

Asuka 120% Special Burning Fest.

All-girl anime fighting. It was crazy, the normal moves clashed off of each other. KOF XII later did something sort of similar, but less insane. Oh, and all the girls in the game are based around different high school subjects, like science, cheerleading, volleyball, and so on.

Robo Pit

2. Robo Pit

It's not really a fighting game in the traditional sense. It's a bit more like Virtual On, really... but better.

Groove on Fight: Gouketsuji Ichizoku 3

6. Groove on Fight: Gouketsuji Ichizoku 3

Ya know, I think I just like the name "Groove on Fight" more than the game itself.

Tobal 2

7. Tobal 2

It's really only obscure because it didn't come out in the US, but whatever. Tobal 2 was amazing in its day.
