Yo Nintendo, you got any more of that Mario? Or that Zelda?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Of all the games on this list, this was the one that made me feel genuinely sad when I realised it was all over. Still delighted and surprised me 120 hours in. Truly special.

Super Mario Odyssey

2. Super Mario Odyssey

Pitch-perfectly designed, with a wonderful sense of discovery and progression, beautiful visuals, and appreciable crowd-pleasing nods to the series' illustrious past.

Horizon Zero Dawn

3. Horizon Zero Dawn

Visually stunning, surprisingly deep combat, and an impressive world with an equally likeable lead character. Huge franchise potential, and some step-up from Killzone.

4. Assassin's Creed Origins

My greatest obsession of 2017, with a map I wanted to explore every nook and cranny of. Bayek's the best AC hero since Ezio, and it was a terrific Xbox One X showcase.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

5. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Machine Games has rammed this sequel with moments I will never forget, and it's unbelievable audacious throughout. I just wish it was as fun to play as it was to watch.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

6. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

The best Uncharted game to date. It's a tight, well-rounded jaunt across some beautiful locales, which grabs you from the outset and knows when to end.

Splatoon 2

7. Splatoon 2

These quick, sharp and satisfying online matches a perfect for the Switch. And thanks to Nintendo’s superb post-release support, I’m still playing it to this day.

Destiny 2

8. Destiny 2

By the time I was done with Destiny 2, I really was hella done with it. Like, for good. But man, the dozens of hours leading up to that moment were super fun, no doubt.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

9. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Combines Mario, the Rabbids and XCOM with unexpectedly delightful results. A great surprise, and I am intrigued by what might come next.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard

10. Resident Evil 7 biohazard

The sheer sense of dread that comes with exploring the Baker household is effective enough when played on a screen, but VR makes this something truly exceptional.
