To be honest, this year had some of my biggest disappointments in the form of Watch_Dogs and Destiny, both of which I found woefully lacking. There were some surprise gems, however. I also feel that I missed out on playing a lot of the better games this year, though I've got many of them in-house and will be able to play them in 2015.
Therefore, I preface this list with a warning that I missed out on a lot of games that probably deserve to be on it, many of which I fully intend to play.

It came out for Wii U this year and it's just... well, it's Duck Hunt guys. What more do you want?
A fantastic console port of a fantastic PC game. Actually, the console version is, in my opinion, superior to the PC version (with the exception of the lack of Seasons, a feature I like in the PC version).
Mario Kart 8 is simply put the best in a long series of mostly great games. It's also one of the most beautiful games of the year (tarnished a bit by decreases in frame rate in multiplayer).
Managed to snag a copy of Shadow of Mordor a couple of months post-release and prioritized it in my play order. I'm so glad I did. The story was weak, but I didn't even care because playing around with the nemesis system was just so much fun.
I adore Fantasy Life for its fabulously cute and funny characters and it's simple yet engaging gameplay. It isn't the most complicated game in the world, but it's incredibly enjoyable. I consistently enjoy going back to it!
Immensely charming and a lot of fun. I am so glad they spun the sparse but entertaining Captain Toad levels from Super Mario 3D World into their own game!
It scratched all the right itches and brings that old school vibe while relieving us of the more annoying features of old style games. Played on the Wii U.
I've only gotten through a small portion of the game thus far, but that much was enough to end up on this list! Very excited to play a great deal more of this game. It's surprisingly hardcore as well.
I missed this game when it was out earlier and despite getting it through PS Plus, I gave the Definitive Edition on PS4 a shot, and I am so glad I did. What a great game, and the Definitive upgrade was gorgeous.
I'm sure it's unoriginal to include such an anticipated game on the list, but SSB on both 3DS and especially Wii U really did deliver. I'm still just barely scratching the surface of it, but damn if it doesn't scratch that old SSB itch.
