Open world is great, not too busy or empty. The writing is great... humor is unlike any other game IMO. Localization is amazing. And just enough reference to past games, not too much.
I made it through Route A, B, C, D, and E and wow, what an experience. It wasn't all fun, some of the boss fights and stumbling sequences were frustrating and long winded but what Nier does in its best parts are like no other. I hope games take inspiration from Nier, using the format of games to tell a uniquely interactive story. I really loved the setting as well. This is my first Platinum game, and I was scared that I would get bored with the button mashy combat, and the perspective changes you see in the demo/trailer. I was wrong, I absolutely love the game play and perspective shifting style. I eventually lowered the difficulty down to the easiest setting enabling an auto combat mode which I admit that I used heavily near the end when I just wanted to see the story through.
Again Nintendo's level design is near perfect. I felt less inclined to explore than I did in Zelda. Maybe due to it not being an expansive open world...not sure why. But this gets the number two spot only because I'm a life long Zelda fanboy.
Destiny is still one of the best playing games ever. For a game centered around repetitive grinding it doesn't feel terrible doing the same public event 10 times in one day. And I'm glad Public Events are more of a focus in Destiny 2, they were my favorite part of Destiny 1.
Mario Kart 8 is a great game, and being on the Switch made it even better.
I loved Steam World Dig on the 3DS. The sequel is the same great concept but bigger. I appraise that but found it less enjoyable with NPC have too much to say interrupting the game loop of digging, cashing out, digging more.
This is my first Splatoon game, not owning a Wii U for the first version, and it was better than I expected. I played very a lot of it for a couple weeks then fell off hard never to return. I did not attempt to play online with friends (since that was a disaster with the phone app being required) and was never around for Salmon Run when it was open. Great gameplay but these above mention issues are very Nintendo which shouldn't be the excuse anymore.
Great fun, even better noises. I enjoyed that each item has a clue associated with it so you can narrow down the areas of the "map".
I am not saying Horizon is a bad game, and I didnt have high expectations, but boy was I let down. Full disclosure I am only a couple hours in, but I cannot stomach anymore right now. I found there to be too many cut scenes and dialogue scenes in the first several hours even past the intro section. The lack of expression on the main characters face during the dialogue scenes is off-putting and almost non of the characters lips were synced making it hard for me to care about this story (I know thats nitpicking). I did not find fighting the robots fun, assuming it would be more fun after several upgrades but I found myself just running past encounters ... but that just led me towards more cut scenes which I also wanted to avoid. I am not going to give up on this game since it was so widely praised. I will try and return in 2018, maybe when I am in a better mood.
Surprisingly good for a promotional game.
