Valiant Hearts: The Great War

1. Valiant Hearts: The Great War

When I was in middle school I read All Quiet on the Western Front for the first time. It was the first time I had really understood how awful war can be. It was big moment for me because up to that point I had seen war simply as another setting for exciting action scenes. War video games for the longest time had been like my view of war before that book. Exciting, intense and empty. Lately though that has started to change. I think this year, and perhaps all years, Valiant Hearts came the closest to realizing the tone and message seen in All Quiet on the Western Front. It has its problems and the gameplay is largely forgettable. But I adored the story and tone...for the most part. It was by far the most memorable game I played this year.
