GOTY 2014

This list will only have games that were released in 2014, and as a result will be pretty short. I played plenty of games this year, but most were from previous years.

Showing 1-8 of 8 items

Mario Kart 8

1. Mario Kart 8

I was going to put Shadow of Mordor at number 1, but I played more Mario Kart 8 than any other game this year. A blast to play through with my wife and so easy to just lose hours to. Excellent track design, fun multiplayer, and great music too.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

2. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Unlike most, I found the story to be enjoyable and didn't have a problem with the characters, but the Nemesis system and the combat is where it's at. Maybe it's just the brutality of it, but I think this is the best version of the Batman combat in any game, the Arkham games included. Having enemies that you actually develop relationships and stories turned an above average open world game into something amazing.

Transistor

3. Transistor

Enjoyed the setting and the story, though it could have been told slightly better. Excellent mechanics and a blast to play. One of the few games I played this year that I just wanted to burn through as fast as I could.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted

4. Sir, You Are Being Hunted

Excellent atmosphere and really enjoyable mechanics. Didn't have much of a reason to play it more than once however. Badass song during the credits.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Nintendo 3DS

5. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Nintendo 3DS

WiiU version. I've always been interested in fighting games but never very good at them. This has a good balance and is a blast to play with friends.

Gods Will Be Watching

6. Gods Will Be Watching

I really enjoyed the concept, and it's executed well for most of the levels. However, I found that the game mechanics didn't quite mesh with certain situations and sometimes broke the difficulty. Why can't I give a pep talk to someone while they help me gather wood? Oh, you're going to run off into the woods despite the fact that the radio is fixed and we just need to wait to be picked up... more food for me then. I don't feel responsible for a characters death if it's due to THEIR stupidity.

LEGO The Hobbit

7. LEGO The Hobbit

A fun game to play through with my wife, but essentially just more of the same. Enjoyed LEGO LOTR more.

Deus Ex: The Fall

8. Deus Ex: The Fall

The PC version came out in 2014 so it still counts. That being said, not a very good game. Purchased only because I am a Deus Ex fan.
