Runners Up 2012

Far more games than 10 are worth mentioning this year.

edit, whoops To the Moon was released last year.

Xenoblade Chronicles

1. Xenoblade Chronicles

Huge open world, ambitious RPG that feels like the best parts of an MMO, but offline.

Resident Evil: Revelations

2. Resident Evil: Revelations

Hard to believe that they fit this thing on the 3ds, very impressive graphics, sound, overall design. Best resident evil game I've played since 4.

Mark of the Ninja

3. Mark of the Ninja

Incredibly well designed 2d stealth.

Hotline Miami

4. Hotline Miami

Loud fast strobe light of a game. Die in a split second, instantly respawn. Weird ass plot, to say the least. Seems to be a comment on video game violence in general, while being one the most visceral adrenalin pumping games I've played this year.... Music is fantastic.

Dishonored

5. Dishonored

First person stealth with a lot of emphasis on player choice shaping the game. I like how it doesn't stop you from breaking the game with some of the powers. I played the whole game as the Rat Man, summoning hordes of rats to devour anyone in my way. Needless to say, kind of broke everything. Most of the time just stood back and watched everyone try to fight rats I'd endlessly summon and die. But I liked that I could do it.

Sleeping Dogs

6. Sleeping Dogs

Does a lot of things right that Rockstar better pay attention to. Kind of devolves into a GTA type "do things for annoying, horrible people that seem to conflict with who your character is" by the last 3/4 of the game, but I appreciate them trying NOT to go down that road.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

7. Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Great sequel to 999, continues the tradition of crazy ass characters and plot.

Torchlight II

8. Torchlight II

User friendly (especially in comparison to Diablo 3) and simple yet awesome designs. I love the clockwork/steampunk and Lovecraftian themes in this.

Lone Survivor

9. Lone Survivor

Super creepy 2d survival game. Successfully does what developers have tried to do with the Silent Hill sequels for years.
