I'm an early 90s child by and large, so while I don't have to travel back in time as much as some may when retracing my gaming steps, it can sometimes be a little tough to remember the details about how I got started and what with. The internet's been a massive help in tracking down a lot of the games I don't remember too well, what with wiki systems like the one here at Giantbomb and video sites like youtube with Let's Plays of just about every game under the sun. This list is something I've basically put together to catalog the games I remember from all those years ago that led to (although probably weren't yet a part of) my obsession with games.

Played this on my family computer at about three or four years old (around about 1995), so it probably dates back the furthest. Couldn't remember the name of this until recently when I searched "dungeon" on GB and went through the list of games - all I could remember was starting off locked in a dungeon, then somehow making it to the sea floor and walking around with a fishbowl on my head, before pulling a bathplug and ending up in a cave. I didn't play The Secret of Monkey Island until 2009, twenty years after its release so the fact that this was probably an inferior game wasn't something I cared for - it was just a game which stayed in my memory for a long time.
Published in the same year as Curse of Enchantia, I would have played this at around about the same time on my home PC. It wasn't until over a decade later that I remembered it though, after seeing youtube gameplay. I distinctly remembered the protagonist's head on the bottom of the screen in the lifebar -- the animation and sounds made when opening doors -- the chicken found on the floor on plates and the sound it made as you picked it up for health. Whether I played it much as a kid or just watched my Mum go at it, I don't know, but I remember it all the same.
DOS version, played this when I was four years old in 1996 I believe at a daycare centre.
DOS version again, at the same daycare centre in 1996. To this day I still suck at this game; have real problems with those ghost fuckers trying to throw their AI off and preventing them from trapping me.
I'm fairly sure that the version of this game that I played was just reprogrammed and placed inside a kids' PC game I was playing in the early 90s, so it definitely wasn't the original stuff. Was still very addicting and fun, though.
Another PC game I played when I was four or five. The snow monster sucked ass. ),:
I played this back in a time where I had no knowledge of geography and barely any idea what was going on in the game... dunno if I want to go back and try it again now that my knowledge in those areas is ever-so-slightly better.
From the bits and pieces I have in memory, I can say that it was probably the port of Super Mario Bros contained within Super Mario All-Stars that I remember. I was basically over at a relative's place at the age of four or five. Snuck into a relative's room while parents were talking and watched him play. Was pretty damn mesmerising, but it would be another year before I'd get a shot at a Mario platformer of my own.
Would have been five or six when I first played this game on the Macs in my school library. It was a weird sort of variation on the classic game Battlezone, but it did have LAN support which was a big plus at the time. Very obscure and hard for me to track down the name of this one but glad I could finally pinpoint it.
The learning curve on this game is fucking steep -- if you want a forgiving game, this is not where to start, especially if you're six years old. That said, it was one of my first games I ever played, and one of my favourites, no less. The animation was pretty amazing for its time, too.
