PS4 Games I played in 2014

Showing 1-10 of 20 items

Dragon Age: Inquisition

1. Dragon Age: Inquisition

I had the first two on the PS3 but never really got around to playing them so when Inquisition was released my expectations were not that high. While some side missions felt slightly repetitive there was a lot of exploring and adventuring to keep me busy.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

2. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

Having never played a Diablo game before I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy Reaper of Souls. It all sounded very basic and not very fleshed out but within minutes I was somersaulting through tombstones while firing a frenzy of arrows at all kinds of undead monsters and minions.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

3. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Perhaps one of the most surprising games of the year was Shadow of Mordor, as with most licensed games you would assume the experience would be painfully mediocre with nothing fresh or exciting to offer. I didn't care much for or pay attention to the story but the open world and nemesis system were brilliant.

Far Cry 4

4. Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4 had everything I look for in a game and a lot more thrown in for good measure. The story was fun to follow, the characters interesting and humorous at the same time, a vast open world just begging to be explored, a fantastic co-op experience, bucket loads of replay value, an ark full of animals, tons of enemies and enough guns and weapons to start your own holy war.

Driveclub

5. Driveclub

Driveclub was on it's a release a bit of a mess, it looked good and the cars controlled well but the AI was almost militant and there was evidence that the game had been released unfinished. Now with it's many patches including dynamic weather the game really shines, the various tweaks and fixes make a more solid racing experience.

The Last of Us

6. The Last of Us

I missed it on the PS3 so once it was released on the PS4 with upgraded graphics and expanded DLC content it was a definite must buy. The story was compelling and the game play almost flawless.

Tomb Raider

7. Tomb Raider

Another title I missed on the PS3 was Tomb Raider, and after playing the Trilogy collection I was eager to see if the reboot had anything on the original series. It was raw and realistic in the best was possible with great attention given to the survival elements.

Metro Redux

8. Metro Redux

Every now and then a game comes along that manages to grip you with fear and shake the living daylights out of you until you either blast your way through with every last bullet or hide in a corner until it goes away. Metro was both terrifying and hugely enjoyable and had me coming back for more time and time again.

Grand Theft Auto V

9. Grand Theft Auto V

More of the same GTA V action and insanity except this time with first person mode and a whole host of minor extras that made all the difference. I'd played through GTA V on the PS3 before so I knew what to expect, but the first person mode was enough of a game changer to warrant going through it all again.

Sleeping Dogs

10. Sleeping Dogs

Just another GTA clone? That's what I was expecting but the Definitive Edition included so much extra content that I couldn't help but really enjoy Sleeping Dogs. It was more hands on than GTA and at it's core almost felt like an open world brawler with random gun play sections and slightly poor driving mechanics.
