Nioh

Nioh

A truly outstanding combat system dragged down with an extremely poor structure. This game could have been special with more of a straight up Souls format. Hopefully they make a sequel and do something else with the design. So much is lacking in this game by comparison to the best of Souls that it makes you appreciate even more how those games did environments, sense of place, progression, world building, story, etc.

Persona 5

Persona 5

Shame. I couldn't get too into it and dropped it early but one day soon I am going to be in the mood and get through it. The early going, with lackluster characters and being all about a rapey volleyball coach was not thrilling tho.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Mass Effect: Andromeda

A solid singleplayer (clearly rushed) and a surprisingly good multiplayer only dragged down by a lack of content. They made by FAR the best combat in a ME game and neglected every other area.

Total War: Warhammer

Total War: Warhammer

I took my time getting in but had a blast with it and how it switched up the TW formula.

Total War: Warhammer II

Total War: Warhammer II

I was too burned out from tons of Total Warhammer 1 to get into this but will dig in soon when it's been updated and grown how TW1 did.

NBA 2K18

NBA 2K18

A great basketball game with some shitty elements (they still fuck up MyCareer yet again) but overall I am bit burnt out on 2K after playing 300+ hours a year over the past 3-4 years.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Some really great moments in the campaign for sure, but also some groaners. The characters are hit an miss for me as well. I had fun blasting through it on Easy and seeing the story but the gameplay got basically no better and the stealth is still awful. Easy helped make it just a shooter and it was repetitive that way but at least not annoying. I don't mean to sound too negative, fun for the time it took and some moments I really did love.

Assassin's Creed Origins

This game is pretty damn great. I think the story and some missions could be better, but there's better writing and missions than any AC since Brotherhood and they got rid of basically every single annoying AC element. The combat is way better, love the Hard mode they added, the stealth is better (and very MGSV like with how the AI works, which is a big compliment from me), the stuff they do with bows is fantastic, the world is huge and wonderful to look at, the hawk seemed like a lazy drone analog at first but is actually awesome to use and adds cool character in its way to the game. I am impressed how much they looked at The Witcher 3 and kind of followed the formula and pulled it off. Good game to follow (maybe the best game of all time). Being a lapsed AC fan who holds the first few in very high regard and the idea of a historical action game in general, I am very happy with the bounce back here.
