This list is comprised of games that take conventional game types and change something about them to make them their own unique twist that really impresses me personally.
Disclaimer: Note that some of the games on this list did not come out in 2011, this is due to the fact that well... this is my first attempt at this list and I want to name all the games that I know of right now that impress me by doing something different, in later iterations of this list I shall make it only for games that came out that specific year.

This game takes the city building genre of strategy games that we all know and have gotten tired of, and changes it. Instead of directly controlling the warriors, rangers, and wizards (and other types of stereotypical fantasy mumbo jumbo archetypes) they do what they want to do by themselves. The only form of control that you have as the player is what you build in your city, when you build it, and to entice the NPCs by placing bounties near/on objectives. It's an interesting idea and I've never seen a game try it ever. It's further made an interesting idea by the way the economy works in-game. You start of with some base money, you use this to make a barracks, wizards tower... places to spawn characters things of that nature. You also use some of this base money to place bounties for your new characters, as your characters complete objectives they gain money, and they spend it in your town, you get more money to spend on the town and on bounties. So as the NPCs complete tasks, the more money you have to entice them with and to expand your town.
I know this is a new game, and it is often considered lame to give props to new games for doing something (since it is often considered fan-boy-ism). But Mortal Kombat is an amazing game. Let me explain my point: I have not played every fighting game out there, I will admit that, but I have played my fair share. Every fighter that I have played in the past has had a story mode that sucks balls. Seriously, the most I've ever seen for written story is usually a paragraph at the end of 12 or so fights or a 30 second FMV video with little or no dialogue, or a paragraph of biography text, and that's about it. This is the first time that I have ever been invested with the characters of a fighting game, and like I said before that is a huge leap from my past experiences. I know their stories ! I actually care ! I know why they are fighting ! (which surprisingly enough really can not be said about most other fighting games, usually its just, "hey here some dudes, kick the fuck out of each other!") So its a fighting game with actual content aimed towards people who are not there just to play online forever, and I appreciate that.
