The main reason that I'm dropping Heavy Rain in the number one slot (other than Persona 3 Portable's ineligibility due to it being a re-release) is that it's just DIFFERENT. If more companies made bold moves like this, the gaming landscape would be far more evolved than it is today. It certainly doesn't hurt that this particular experiment resulted in one of the most emotionally engaging, frightening video games ever made
This game was a fantastic evolution of the already-incredible original. The story remains incredibly engaging, but fell just shy of Heavy Rain's real-world setting
It may not have shaken up the formula too much, but gorgeous graphics and incredible set piece moments were enough to mark this as the best God of War game
While not the evolutionary step that AC2 was from the original, this is in many ways the definitive AC experience. The multiplayer in particular is excellent
Quirky, funny, and addictive, the newest Fable may have fallen short of Lionhead's boasts (AGAIN,) but it remains a great RPG
The best multiplayer game of the year. The recent Vietnam expansion only cements this game's legendary online status. This game would be much higher on the list if the single player campaign wasn't so dreadfully mediocre.
Not as memorable as the original, but mechanically and visually superior
There's so much awesome stuff to do in DR2, it can be easy to forget how broken the game can be sometimes. Boss fights bring some glaring issues to light, but otherwise this is a hugely entertaining romp through an undead playground
The game went by quickly, but it was one hell of a roller coaster. This was a game that demanded quick reactions and an even quicker trigger finger
Often surreal, but never quite scary, Alan Wake nonetheless managed to establish an interesting fiction populated by believable characters.
