This year my son turned one, and with that my time as well as the money I was able to spend on games were significantly reduced. I also made the decision to switch from the 360 to the PS3 so I can take advantage of the library at the end of the generation as well as the insane value that is Playstation Plus. Because of that, I played just as many older games as I did new ones so I decided this years list should reflect that. So here are the top ten gaming experiences I've had in 2013.

Just completely and utterly blown away by this game. The highs are so high that I barley remember any of the lows(fuck that stealth mission in the beginning). There's nothing like diving from jeep to jeep in a deadly, fast paced gunfight that would normally just be a damn cutscene. Or jumping from car to car on a train as hardened killers shoot at you and a goddamn gunship destroys cars behind you. Way late to the party on this one but I'm glad I showed up. it was the best party I've been to this year.
The best 2013 game I've played this year and a game that connected with me much more than I expected it to. Sure you can pick apart all the time travel, and the multi dimensional stuff or you can condemn it for being too violent for some reason. For me it just wasn't about that. It was a story of forgiveness and redemption set in a beautiful wonderland in the sky with a powder keg of violence under the surface just waiting to explode. It was this crazy, fun, wacky roller coaster that packed a huge emotional punch the more time you spend with Booker and Elizabeth. It connected with me not only as a gamer, but as a father as well and I will never forget it. Also the combat was fine, fun even, but yeah there was a little bit too much of it.
The first GTA game that I've played to completion. The set up with three different yet connected interwoven stories was a really cool approach. And the heists were some of the absolute biggest moments in gaming this year. A definite masterpiece.
A wacky, wonderful, charming RPG that I wished I was able to play when it was new. Just fantastic!
For that time when I was down to one surviving crew member, my sensors were down, my shield was destroyed, my ship was on fire, I was being boarded by evil blood crazed insects, and I was able to suck all my problems out of the airlock by opening all the doors. FTL isn't the best story, but it is where the best stories come from.
Another game about telling stories as you live in the shoes of a man who is doomed no matter what he does. Do you try to help people at the risk of your family dying or freezing to death? Or do you sell out your own people just to keep the lights on. Maybe not the most fun game to play this year, though it's more fun then you would think, but definitely one of the most memorable.
As much as I love this game, I'm convinced it hates me. No other game that I have played this year builds you up so high with accomplishment only to crash you down hard with failure.
Jesus christ... Would have been GOTY 2011 if I had played it then. It's the only game where cockney The Hulk can parachute out of a VTOL jet into a crowd of civvies and gang members and then proceded to end their lives with a dildo.
Such an inventive, punishing, hilarious experience. There are dozens upon dozens of portraits hung of failed generations who have barley made any head way into the goddamn castle.
A game that I was prepared to just completely write off just goes ahead and totally stuns me. Laura's journey from naive yet eager archaeology student to hardened adventurer is a taught and gripping tale. It does require some huge suspension of disbelief in the early and end parts of the game but once the shit hits the fan it's a rewarding experience.
