Raccoon City was an American midwestern city depicted as the primary location of both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
Location and Economy
The economy of Raccoon City is primarily dominated by the
Umbrella Corporation. Umbrella financed most of the city's projects, giving the company a positive image to the people of Raccoon City. Fifty-percent of the citizens of Raccoon were employed by Umbrella.
Raccoon City boasts a populations of around 100,000 residents.
History
Raccoon City was led by Mayor Michael Warren, who served for 11 years after he elected in 1987. Wanting to modernize the city, Warren established the high-tech cable car transportation service and also made contributions to the city's electrical system. To help bolster his campaign, Warren struck a deal with Umbrella Corporation to help provide funding for several of his projects, which included public utilities, welfare work, and law enforcement.
Because of Warren's campaign, the small town eventually evolved from a rural community to an industrialized city. However, the city's modernization was accompanied with a great deal of negativity as crime rates soared and a few amount of terrorist threats were called upon the city. The Raccoon Police Department (R.P.D.) established the
Special Tactics And Rescue Squad (S.T.A.R.S.) in 1996 as a countermeasure to the wave of crime.
Destruction
In Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, the U.S. Military deployed a nuclear attack on Raccoon city in hopes of eliminating the T-Virus. The Resident Evil films, however, alter the event with Umbrella destroying the city in an attempted cover up.
