We have survived snowpocalypse, but sadly the month of February proved to be a bit of a slow month in the medium of new music(hopefully you were too busy catching up with January). Still, there were a few standouts that deserve attention. Technically, one of them came out last month, but with only four days for me to find and enjoy them, I didn't get around to them until the month of February.Also, there were a handful of disappointments, I want to start with Lil Wayne. Yes, Lil Wayne's Rebirth was a joke from the start, but I was kind of hoping that he was going to somehow prove everyone wrong and put out something that was at least above mediocre. Sadly, Prom Queen was one of the better songs of the album. A lot of fuss was made about Joanna Newsom's epic Triple LP "Have One on Me", and came to good reviews, but it's just not something I can honestly say that I enjoyed in the least bit, so she goes down the crapper as well. Shout Out Louds and Hot Chip are also going to be tossed on my list as "people that can go fuck themselves".
Anyway, I've got a small list of three albums that I suggest you check out in anyway possible.
3. The Soft Pack - The Soft Pack
A band formally known as "The Muslims" changed their name into a much wussier name, "The Soft Pack". Now that you're over that, these guys bring fast paced 60's Punk Rock songs that generally last around two minutes long. Really, they don't add too much more than that, but you don't ever have to, bands like The Ramones have did the same thing throughout their career. Like most punk cd's, though, the album tends to drag towards the end, but it's a great set of songs to listen to one at a time.2. Los Campesinos! - Romance is Boring
A fairly unheard of band, it was pretty much luck that I found this album and gave it a chance. The sounds and moods generated by the band definitely intrigued me on first listen, and then when I sat down and devoted my attention, I ended up falling in love with another CD that I had no intention of even knowing about. Finding new bands is so much fun. The sound is a very poppy version of late 80's grunge bands like Sonic Youth, etc...1. Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
Looking on this small list, these are three bands that I didn't know or cared existed. Going back to the whole "it's fun to find new stuff you love" thing, I'm so glad there was no well known band putting out something excellent this month, because chances are I would have missed out on these guys. Leading the top of the pack is Local Natives. The best way I feel I can describe Local Natives is "Fleet Foxes with Balls". Great harmonies, along with exceedingly excellent instrumentals (especially the rhythm section) put this album as my favorite of the month. With this CD, I'm adding Local Natives in my "must see" list for my trip to Bonnaroo this summer.Next Month:
