Seems like Disney buys a studio every 3-5 years, makes a big push into gaming, then when things don't quite work out, they just shut it down and fire everyone. Sounds like this might be the end of that sad cycle at least.

I trained in audio engineering, particularly in recording music. I haven't been able to get much work in that field, due largely to my own anxiety, lack of confidence and commitment. But the key things about that industry are that A) nobody understands how much work is involved, B) nobody values the product the way they used to, C) nobody is really willing to pay for any of it.

When you work in a creative field, there are always going to be people out there who think the love of the work, or even the vague promise of increased exposure/publicity, should be ample compensation. This is bullshit.

Just because one guy is willing to break himself to get by, everyone else who doesn't do that just isn't dedicated enough, and doesn't deserve to work? Fuck that noise. Fuck all of it.

Regarding Baldur's Gate, I think there's a middle ground where they meant well and did their best. Maybe it's not up to the standard of some pop-up internet committee, but unless it's actively malicious, at worst it's not great writing.

But the internet is completely disingenuous about these issues, on almost every front. The internet doesn't understand middle grounds. It apparently only understands fawning hyperbolic ecstasy and absolute frothing vitriolic insanity.

I like the developers' response. They accepted legitimate criticisms, rejected the internet bullshit, and committed to improving the work. And taking out the joke because frankly, that's the only part those people really give a shit about.

As a sidenote, when I see "SJW" somewhere, I read it as "sjew", and I think of them as Eric Cartman.

I loved Twilight Princess at the time. There was a scale to it, a darker mood, that I found quite enjoyable. I don't know that it's aged well, but I don't think Ocarina has either for that matter.

My former boss told me how excited he was about the announcement earlier in the year, and he told me how he met Nomura in Japan. Then he said that if they changed anything, anything at all, that he would buy another ticket to Japan and "murder some c**ts." [for reference, this is in Scotland, hence the language].

I wasn't quite sure what to make of that.

Why would they remake it without doing something new with it? What would be the point? A pretty HD re-skin? Shitty voice acting?

Look, I loved VII in its day - I know the hip thing to do now is to say VII is terrible but I just can't. Even after all that "Compilation of..." garbage, I still love VII. Obviously some of that old stuff just doesn't work well now. If you don't want it to be different, maybe you're better just sticking with the original version.

I watched the trailer and I felt no attraction to it whatsoever. It doesn't even look like the Midgar I remember. Guess I'll follow my own advice.

I have, in the latter half of my 20s, had difficulty with the very idea of home that I can't quite touch on. I love my family, and my friends, but I most often feel slightly outside of it, slightly outside of my own life, not part of it. I think that's one of the reasons I really connected on a profound level to stuff like Fez, Limbo, Gone Home, and especially Kentucky Route Zero in recent years. I've always really been attracted to certain themes of disembodiment, or disconnection, from the state of reality. A world that doesn't really change whether you engage with it or not, or one where you are powerless to do so.

Anyway, great article.

That was fun. I agree the edits were jarring, but I think that's just because I'm not used to seeing them in GB content. It's hard to communicate a cut when you're in a videogame because you don't necessarily know if it's the game doing the cuts in real time. I'm all for shorter tighter videos, so I hope they find a good footing on it.

Maybe the cuts need a little transition with a quick sound cue?
