I regulary run into people telling other people to commit suicide while playing Overwatch or using slurs. It's not a good experience. I like Ubisoft's new Rainbow Six Siege policy where they instantly ban people who use slurs. I still think most developers have been too lax and not harsh enough when it comes to banning people who are toxic.

Blizzard filters out "ggez" and replaces it with another phrase. They could do the same with slurs but hide the text and instaban the offender but they don't.

The developer of the Overcast app for iOS released a podcast mp3 chapter encoder app called forecast for macOS. Maybe check it out if you're researching software. It has a feature where you can import markers from your audio editor.

"Import markers as chapters

There’s no need to manually create chapters in Forecast. Simply create markers in your audio editor as you edit your podcast, export it as a .WAV file to Forecast, and Forecast imports each marker as a chapter."

Was the 6 GB test video encoded with h264 or the new h265(HEVC)?

A delidded i7 8700K or i7 8086K overclocked to 5+ ghz will probably last you a long time. You'll probably have to upgrade your GPU sooner.

Some unrealistic scenarios where it wouldn't last as long would be if

  • a. RAM prices dropped and games started requiring 64GB or 128GB memory for ultra detail textures,
  • b. a new kind of faster memory that requires you to get a new motherboard and CPU is released,
  • c. game engines or middle ware started utilizing a lot more cores and 8+ cores becomes the norm for ultra settings with a lot more AI and better physics,
  • d. VR or raytracing becomes more popular and there are VR or raytracing specific hardware features in CPUs,
  • e. Intel have said that they are working on a new GPU for 2020(this is not speculation, they have announced this) and it requires a new CPU/Mobo/Memory.

Perhaps none of these scenarios are realistic since developers would most likely be constrained by console hardware, mainstream PC desktops and laptops when designing games. Very few devs seem to target the high-end PC enthusiasts exclusively these days.

The next-gen consoles are rumored to be using AMD Ryzen CPUs and AMD Navi GPUs. Neither Ryzen or Navi is targeting the ultra high-end. With Navi AMD is aiming at Geforce 1080 performance at $250 instead of trying to beat the next generation ultra high end Nvidia cards.

I would probably read comments on videos if they were treated as letters to the editor, emails to the podcasts or questions from chat. If moderators or interns could filter out the bad comments and only show the good comments below the video I would probably read them. You could have a highlight system where all comments are hidden unless you click a button but highlighted comments are shown by default.

My guess is that most people do not come to Giant Bomb to read the comments but to watch the videos. I guess what I'm saying is that I want curated comments curated by non-Steam-curators. The Giant Bomb staff picks and chooses which video games to show in their videos from the video game stores that are full of garbage. I want the same for comments. Letting moderators and staff showcase what good comments look like by highlighting them would ideally incentivize people to put more effort into their comments. Maybe it's too much effort because there are not a lot of good comments and you're just polishing a turd.

I don't know how much resources or manpower the moderation of comments require but if you're spending time dealing with a comment section that is just "fine", "acceptable", "okay I guess" or sometimes "kind of shitty" it seems like a waste of resources. There are plenty of other places to discuss games or giant bomb videos. I don't have the stats but if few or no people read the comments attached to videos or articles removing the comment section would make sense to me. It would maybe even increase the activity in the forums which could use some more people. Might even increase the volume of people sending in emails to the podcasts or ask questions in the chat.

The comment section below videos might even be hurting the community by siphoning off activity that would have ended up in the forums or on a user blog.

"Computer scientists from Stony Brook University, NVIDIA and Adobe have collaborated on a computational framework that gives VR users the perception of infinite walking in the virtual world – while limited to a small physical space. The framework also enables this free-walking experience for users without causing dizziness, shakiness, or discomfort typically tied to physical movement in VR. And, users avoid bumping into objects in the physical space while in the VR world.

To do this, the researchers focused on manipulating a user’s walking direction by working with a basic natural phenomenon of the human eye, called saccade. Saccades are quick eye movements that occur when we look at a different point in our field of vision, like when scanning a room or viewing a painting. Saccades occur without our control and generally several times per second. During that time, our brains largely ignore visual input in a phenomenon known as “saccadic suppression” – leaving us completely oblivious to our temporary blindness, and the motion that our eyes performed."

This is pretty amazing. We are one step closer to having something like the Star Trek Holodeck.

If you want to see what it would look like you could go into your color settings on your TV and turn down the blue color. It will look more orange/green.

Yes, if they filter out blue light everything will look more orange/yellow/green. How much depends on the strength of the tint. I got a pair of safety glasses that have a 100% orange tint to reduce blue light in the evening and they make everything look very orange. I got them to improve my sleep though, not to reduce glare. Not really sure what reducing blue light during the day would do since daylight has a blue tint.

All light but especially blue light during the evening before you go to sleep can negatively affect your circadian rhythm and your sleep.

One way to reduce eyestrain is to adjust the brightness of your screens to the light in the room. You shouldn't use the same brightness in a room with sunlight coming in through a window as you do in a dark room. Smartphones have automatic brightness control but most televisions and monitors do not.

On Iphones and Ipads the blue filter feature is called night shift.

You could try using a SPDIF/toslink optical cable to connect your soundcard to an 'external amp' / 'box' / 'toslink to rca converter'. Since it's optical and not electrical it could solve the potential grounding issue. The downside is that it might bypass the nice DAC on your internal soundcard. You could also try an external usb soundcard with optical out.

Have you tried hooking up different speakers to the same RCA port on your soundcard?

Advertising works(that's why companies spend so much money on it). Everything you read has an impact on your mind even if you think it does not. Block the noise. Block everything. Improve the signal to noise ratio.

Get the Stylus addon.
