Soundtracks of the Year: 2010

2010 was a great year in game music. While I couldn't get around to playing every game and probably missed out on some great songs, these are the ten games that top my list of soundtracks for 2010.

List items

  • God dammit. While the game itself is jank personified, it still found its way into my heart as one of the most memorable gaming experiences of the year. The soundtrack may only be one facet of the cult hit enigma that is Deadly Premonition, but "Life is Wonderful" will stick with me forever.

  • Infectiously catchy and groovy in all the right ways, the soundtrack to VVVVVV (appropriately titled PPPPPP) will stay on my iPod for a long time to come.

  • I love to hate Super Meat Boy. As difficult and complete-mental-breakdown inducing as the game is, the soundtrack never lets your hundreds upon thousands of deaths get in the way of the songs consistently playing without interruption. Great design choice on their part.

  • Perhaps one of the more underrated aspects of this Stephen King meets Twin Peaks psychological thriller is the brilliant use of music. The way each "episode" of the television-drama styled game ends with a licensed track from some fairly well known artists, in addition to integrating some of the "original" songs into the plot of the game shows that Remedy knows how to use music effectively.

  • I'm aware that some of the best songs from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are more or less lifted from the last game. That being said, Jesper Kyd's continued work on the series never ceases to enthrall me. Few games are able to invoke the kind of emotion through the use of music as Assassin's Creed. "City of Rome" is a standout track.
