Professor Elm is the region professor for Johto in the Pokémon universe; he is responsible for giving new trainers their starter Pokémon, Cyndaquil, Chikorita, or Totodile. His field of study is Pokémon breeding and he is also credited for discovering Pokémon eggs. He has so far only appeared in the second generation of Pokémon games, Gold/Silver, and Crystal, as well as their remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver. Like the other Professors in the Pokémon series his English name is derived from a tree, in his case the Elm tree.
